• The anti-aging properties of vitamin E have been demonstrated in laboratory studies where cells grown in media enriched with the vitamin lived longer than cells grown in media without the supplement.
  

• Up to 80 percent of older adults fail to get the minimal DRI of 30 IU of vitamin E, and only a fraction of the 400 IU we recommend. 

• Food sources of vitamin E include vegetable oils, whole grains, wheat germ, brown rice, eggs, nuts, and leafy green vegetables, but it is almost impossible to get the optimal dose from diet alone.

• Vitamin E has numerous benefits:
  

• It has been helpful in treating age spots on the skin; it decreases scar formation, and may help reduce wrinkles when used as a skin cream.

• Protects the body from various toxins and carcinogens such as mercury, lead, ozone, and nitrous oxide. It prevents the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines from the nitrites and nitrates found in cured meats, cigarette smoke and polluted air.

• Helpful in the treatment of angina, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and thrombophlebitis (blood clots in the legs). It helps prevent blood clots that can cause strokes, and has been shown to improve blood flow to the extremities and to relieve circulatory problems.

• Increases HDL, or good cholesterol levels, while decreasing total cholesterol levels.

• Helps protect against cancers of the lung, esophagus, colon, cervix, and breast. In patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, vitamin E appears to protect normal cells from the damaging effects of chemotherapy drugs, reducing some of the drugs’ side effects without reducing their effectiveness.
  
  

• A recent study showed that people who took a specific subtype of vitamin E all by itself (alpha-tocopherol) may have a slightly increased (five percent) risk of death.

• This study was widely publicized and erroneously interpreted to mean that all vitamin E supplementation is unsafe. 

• But, it is important to understand that alpha-tocopherol is not the same thing as vitamin E, as Vitamin E is really composed of multiple subfractions, including beta-, delta- and gamma- tocopherols as well. 

• Gamma-tocopherol is the most common dietary form of vitamin E and is a critically important form of vitamin E in terms of antioxidant benefit. 

• Yet taking alpha-tocopherol by itself decreases gamma-tocopherol levels. Therefore, when taking a vitamin E supplement, it is important to include all the subtypes (alpha-, beta-, delta- and gamma-tocopherol).
