Milk Thistle

People today are exposed to an increasing variety and amount of environmental toxins. The seeds and fruits of the milk thistle plant, a member of the daisy family, contain the bioflavinoid silymarin which has powerful hepatoprotective properties. Silymarin has been shown to protect the liver from free radical damage as it goes about its business of ridding the body of toxins.

Multiple clinical trials have shown that milk thistle can protect the liver from damage from multiple sources. For instance, in cases of exposure to the poisonous mushroom A. phalloides, milk thistle has been shown to be hepatoprotective. Patients who have received milk thistle as a treatment for acute viral hepatitis have shown a decrease in their elevated liver enzymes suggesting healing. Patients with alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis are helped by milk thistle.

Side effects with milk thistle are uncommon and serious toxicity has rarely been reported.

Dosage: One to two capsules daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional.
